Relevant legislation
In Victoria there are several pieces of legislation of relevance to the area of sexual assault and child abuse.
Crimes act 1958 (Sections 32 - 60)
Objectives:
- to uphold the fundamental right of every person to make decisions about his or her sexual behaviour and to choose not to engage in sexual activity; and
- to protect children and persons with a cognitive impairment from sexual exploitation.

Children, youth and families act 2005
Objectives:
- to provide for community services to support children and families; and
- to provide for the protection of children; and
- to make provision in relation to children who have been charged with, or who have been found guilty of, offences; and
- to continue The Children's Court of Victoria as a specialist court dealing with matters relating to children.

Children, youth and families regulations 2007
Objectives:
- to prescribe various matters required to be prescribed or permitted to be prescribed under the Children, Youth and Families Act 2005.

Family violence protection act 2008
Objectives:
- maximise safety for children and adults who have experienced family violence; and
- prevent and reduce family violence to the greatest extent possible; and
- promote the accountability of perpetrators of family violence for their actions.
