Aboriginal society is made up of a number of families who represent the community. The bigger the family the greater the likelihood that the members will hold positions of power in the wider Aboriginal community.

Each family has it's own hierarchy with recognised roles for the individual leaders; e.g. one leader will have responsibility as the spokesperson with the broader community.

Aboriginal community groups in Dandenong and Hastings are made up of a number of families. In liaising with the Aboriginal community, service providers need to communicate with all the leaders in all the families to ensure that the development of service can be achieved and delivered to all in need.
