Aboriginal time

Home: Workers: Counselling Issues: Aboriginal issues

By Cheryl Drayton, 1998, Monash Medical Centre, Aboriginal Liaison Officer

This is about presenting an understanding about Aboriginal Culture and its interpretation by Aboriginal people themselves in dealing with the Aboriginal people.

Aboriginal time

As a rule Aboriginal people do not function in structured time orientated routines. Their values do not place a high priority on keeping/being on time for appointments, public transport schedules and the like they focus on the past and the present rather than the future.

Mainstream agencies are focused on appointments and running services to a timed schedule. This is in conflict with Aboriginal values and can deter Aboriginal people from accessing the services when the time is right for them.
