This information series was produced by Allison Payet as part of 'Bridging The Gap: The Impact Of Sexual Assault on Oral Health & Dental Experiences' (2007)
The information in this booklet will assist you to:
- Recognise the possible indicators of sexual assault in a dental setting and support the patient in ways that are indicative of best practice.
Why has this series been developed?
This series of information sheets has been developed as a result of the research project 'The Pain of Silence/Fear' exploring the impact of sexual assault on adult victim/survivors experiences of dental treatment.
After overwhelming request from dental professionals, the information series has been developed to support them in recognizing possible indicators of sexual assault and responding in ways that represent best practice.
How can it be useful for me?
As a practicing member of the health care field, dental professionals have a responsibility to support victim/survivors of sexual assault and respond in ways that are not re-traumatising for the individual.
The information series can inform you of the statistics, effects and indicators of sexual assault and also provides suggestions to support you in working with these patients.
Useful tips
Remember that disclosure is not necessary in order to support a victim/survivor in the dental setting. Your local CASA can answer your questions or provide consultation.
