Naturopathy and sexual assault

Home: Survivors: Healing: Naturopathy

by Donna Fowler

Philosophically naturopathy aims to allow the individual to facilitate their own healing and maintain wellbeing. In the case of sexual assault, one often needs to look more deeply at the individual than just at direct and most obvious trauma. Each person responds to different situations and experiences, both positive and negative, in vastly different ways, and so each person requires a specific wholistic "plan of attack" tailored to their individual responses.

Often we tend to look only superficially at our symptoms, or responses and we think of the obvious, less subtle symptoms. In extreme instances such as sexual assault often there is a hierarchy of responses and symptoms that slowly unravel over many years, often resulting in illness and emotional distress. These may not appear until many years after the actual trauma and thus the link is not always apparent and so unfortunately missed.

Naturopathy aims to treat an individual in a wholistic encompassing manner, acknowledging the subtleties of the individual and all the influences in an individual's life that may impact upon their wellbeing. Modalities that may be used include:

  • Herbal medicine
  • Homeopathy
  • Bach Flower Remedies
  • Nutritional Therapy
  • Dietary and lifestyle management
  • Celliods
  • Massage
  • Aromatherapy

This list is certainly not complete and many naturopaths may incorporate many other modalities into their treatment plan.
