What sexual assault services provide

Over the past decade a gradual development in the number and range of support services available to victim/ survivors of sexual assault has occurred. In particular, a number of sexual assault centres have been established.

These Centres provide a range of services including:

  • Crisis care support with access to medical and legal services, (in some of the centres these services are available on a 24 hour basis);
  • Counselling and individual advocacy support for victims/ survivors, their family and friends. Some centres provide short term and long term counselling;
  • Consultation and education services;
  • Information, research and public advocacy through, for example, media and government liaison;
  • Some centres also provide victim/survivor support groups.

Most centres have few referral conditions although each operates on a regional basis.
