Restorative justice practice brings victim and offender face to face to talk about and deal with offending behaviour. A definition of restorative justice is that it is "a process whereby parties with a stake in a specific offence collectively resolve how to deal with the aftermath of the offence and its implication for the future".
This practice finds its roots in the way many indigenous cultures traditionally dealt with deviant, disruptive or victimizing behaviour in their communities. However, questions remain as to whether in a Western society it is appropriate for all crimes or should be restricted to adolescent offenders, crimes against property or intra familial violence where victims want to maintain some family relationships.
