Common STIs - Pubic Lice (or Crabs)

Home: Survivors: For Males: Sexually transmissible infection

Cause

A pubic lice infestation is caused by the crab louse Phthirus pubis.

Symptoms

Itchiness in the pubic hair or occasionally in other hairy body parts, such as a man's chest. A close look may show tiny, crab like lice.

How is it transmitted?

In most cases pubic lice are passed from person to person where pubic hair (or other hair) touches. Lice can also be spread through sharing clothing, towels or sheets.

Management

Effective lotions are available from pharmacies. You do not need a prescription. Clothes, towels and bedding should be washed in hot water. It is important to tell sexual partners so they can get treatment too.

Prevention

Unfortunately condoms offer no protection against pubic lice.

If you have a new partner and develop itching in the pubic area, you should see your doctor.
