- Your SECASA Counsellor will be contacted by the SMLS worker.
- You will receive a telephone call from the SMLS worker to organise an appointment for you to discuss your Application for Assistance. Please bring your police statement and any other relevant documents with you.
- Your appointment will take place where the following things will happen:
- You will fill out a basic information sheet and consent form
- You will fill out 5 Authority to Act forms that will allow your SMLS worker to obtain confidential documents from your SECASA Counsellor, and any other person who has information relating to your Application for Assistance.
- Your SMLS worker will read your Police Statement.
- You and your SMLS worker will complete your Victims of Crime Assistance Tribunal Application.
- You will sign the Application for Assistance in front of a Lawyer.
- If the act of violence occurred more than 2 years ago, you and your SMLS worker will complete an Extension of Time application.
- You will receive a letter summarising the appointment and the things discussed.
- Your SMLS worker will send in your Application for Assistance with your Police Report.
- After approximately 2 weeks, the Tribunal will send an Acknowledgment of Application to your SMLS worker. From this date, you and your SMLS worker will have four months to submit all relevant documents to the Tribunal.
- Your SMLS worker will book an appointment with a clinical psychologist who will write a report for the Tribunal.
- Your SMLS worker will send you a letter confirming your appointment with Joan Callahan.
- You will need to attend an appointment with a clinical psychologist.
- Your SMLS worker will seek a report from the clinical psychologist and from your SECASA counsellor to substantiate your Application for Assistance.
- Your SMLS worker and you will collect receipts for things already paid for, and invoices for future things you would like to claim for.
- Your SMLS worker will send these into the Tribunal along with any reports. Your SMLS worker will request a Hearing Date.
- When your SMLS worker receives a Hearing date, they will book a barrister to speak on your behalf.
- The Hearing will occur which the Tribunal may or may not want you to attend.
- You will receive a letter from your SMLS worker summarising the outcome of your Application for Assistance.
- Your file will be closed.

Documents needed to complete your application for assistance

- Original receipts for things you have already paid for yourself
