Male This article is written for men and assumes a male offender, however SECASA acknowledges that both men and women can be survivors of sexual abuse and that offenders can be male and female.

Sexual assault is an act of violence.

It is estimated that 1 in 6 boys are sexually assaulted before the age of 18 years.

Male sexual assault is a social problem that stems from mainly male, but sometimes female, sex offenders using power over boys and men by sexually assaulting them.

Male sexual assault can involves a wide range of behaviours including genital touching, oral and anal penetration and exhibitionism. All of these can be traumatizing.

Many male survivors feel confused about sexual identity and masculinity issues. Sexual assault also affects self esteem, confidence, trust and intimacy.

The vast majority of men, who have been sexually assaulted, will not offend in later life.

Counselling can be a relief from the burden of secrecy and dealing with issues alone.
