Home: Family & Friends: Caring for Yourself: Should I have counselling too?
Counselling for parents can be very helpful. If you are feeling overwhelmed by your own responses to your child's sexual assault it may be a good idea to find someone to talk to. You have also experienced significant trauma which may be easier to cope with if you have counselling. If you also experienced sexual assault as a child you may find counselling particularly helpful. Effective counselling can make a significant difference to your life.
Counselling may also be beneficial for assisting you with your child and their behaviour. There are also groups for parents whose children have been assaulted. These are often advertised in local newspapers, doctors rooms and community health centres. Many parents find contact with parents in the same situation very helpful.
