I was abused by a neighbour for two years. I couldn't tell because he said I'd get into trouble and everyone thought he was great. He used to look after me and my brother after school. I was angry all the time and I got into trouble at school. Dad knew something was wrong but I couldn't tell him.
Then this neighbour was interviewed by the police and he said he had assaulted me. I had to give a statement. I was so scared that everyone would blame me. I felt so guilty for not telling because he had assaulted lots of other kids but I thought I was the only one.
I went to a group with other kids it had happened to. I didn't want to and I didn't want to talk about what happened to me. All the kids were scared of the same things I was and that really helped me. I still get reminded of what happened but I don't think about it all the time anymore.
If any of these things have happened to you, tell a grown up you trust right away! If you are too frightened or are not sure what to do, then you can ring the Kids Helpline on 1800 551 800, or ring us (CASA) on 1800 806 292, the person you speak to will know what to do.
